Crafting compelling video

 

Hi. I’m Ben Watkins, a filmmaker and motion graphics artist based in San Francisco, California. I’m incorporated as Big Wonderful Inc. and produce video content for creative agencies and clients like LinkedIn. As a seasoned producer, I oversee the creative process from concept to final edits. I call on fellow artists to help out from time to time, but most often I handle things myself because I’m passionate about working in motion picture and sound.

The Process

A lot of people are telling their story through video for the first time these days. Whether you’re hiring your teenager or an expensive production company to craft your content, it’s important to understand the process well to avoid missteps and get the best product possible for the available budget. In other words, don’t spend a dime on costly production until you’re sure you’ve got your message right and your script is final.

LinkedIn Recruiter Mobile

We crafted this story-driven walk-through to help Product Manager Sankar Venkatraman launch Recruiter Mobile. In the video, a recruiter uses the app to engage candidates while his newfound mobility grants him an early escape from work. Ben Watkins: Motion graphics, editing. Welcome to The Social Department. It’s a hand-printed t-shirt company full of heart and great design. In this founder’s story, we turn viewers into long-term fans by capturing the authenticity and sincerety of owners Andy & Christy Taray.


LinkedIn Ads with Video

LinkedIn’s Will Hambly and Erin Delacroix wanted to promote the new ability for advertisers to use video within their banner space. We built this lean, 30-second spot to highlight the rich experience of video and educate users on targeting through filters. Ben Watkins: Motion graphics, sound, editing. Dave Swan Braxton: voice.


LinkedIn Sponsored Updates

LinkedIn’s Keith Richey and Lana Khavinson tapped us to help promote their newly-launched Sponsored Updates. We conceived this day-in-the-life story where a marketer sponsors an update to reach beyond her company’s network. Ben Watkins: motion graphics, editing. Eliciana Nascimento: production. LinkedIn Talent Solutions

LinkedIn has built a suite of products to help talent acquisition specialists find, manage, and engage top talent. We worked with marketing manager Blake Buisson to give them this introductory, bird’s-eye view of the entire Talent Solutions suite. Ben Watkins: motion graphics, editing. To encourage companies to make effective use of their LinkedIn Company Pages, we worked with LinkedIn’s Erin Delacroix and Lana Khavinson to conceive this story where an admin spends the new year boosting engagement. Do people want to work for your company? LinkedIn launched a metric called the Talent Brand Index to find out and tapped us to explain it to employers. LinkedIn Recruiter Overview

LinkedIn’s Blake Buisson tapped us to give his first-time visitors a conceptual summary of their flagship search and pipelining tool, Recruiter. We worked with him to craft a flowing script and animated conceptual elements of the interface to get the job done. Ben Watkins: motion graphics, sound, editing. Mary Wells: voice.


LinkedIn Career Pages

LinkedIn wanted to urge employers to use Career Pages and ad products effectively. We produced this story where a company uses those tools to engage a top performer who wasn’t otherwise looking to switch jobs. Ben Watkins: motion graphics, editing, videography. LinkedIn Talent Pipeline Demo

LinkedIn needed a straightforward walk-through of their Talent Pipeline product. We worked with their marketing team to build this conceptual intro to the piece to give it life, brand presence, and communicate the core value before viewers were led through the site. The Linus Group: We speak scientist

This was a teaser video for a series of themed vignettes we derived from hours of interviews with scientists shot at The Linus Group to promote their expertise in marketing to scientists. Ben Watkins: editing, packaging. Michael Long: strategy, writing. Ted Cohen: direction. Clay Cahoon: camera, sound. Zack Dzanko: art direction.

NRC.gov Redesign Promo

Data Federal gave NRC.gov a much-needed redesign. Their Creative Director Lars Klores was worried about alienating longtime users of the site once they pushed live so he tapped Ben to create this video highlighting the changes and their value. KBM Group Holiday Greeting 2013

Each year, KBM Group Creative Director Brian Whalen calls up Ben to help him produce a company holiday greeting that speaks to hearts. This year, we fleshed out paired his script with touching video clips, motion graphics and music. Ben Watkins: motion graphics, editing, stock video wrangling.


LinkedIn for Nonprofits

We worked with LinkedIn’s Meg Garlinghouse and Erin Delacroix to create a video that reminds folks in the nonprofit world about the benefits of using LinkedIn: connecting with donors, hiring passionate people, and learning from others.
